There is a degree of self-consciousness in publishing these days. Final State Press is not a press in the mode of Alfred A. Knopf, Random House, or even Copper Canyon Press. It is not a small press run by a single editor such as Black Heron Press or City Lights. Final State Press is more mechanism than press. It is a platform that forms the backbone in the regular book production of participating authors, or rather it is one of those plastic set of rings that holds a six pack of soda. Final State Press is currently working with a number of writers who regularly produce work; this site will serve as a channel for their work.

Final State Press published its first book in 1998, The End is the Beginning by Matt Briggs as a DRM-free ebook and paperback book. Partly proof of concept in the publication model of Final State Press, and also to release recent stories by Matt Briggs, the publication proved successful. The aim was to profitably produce a book of short stories. The book received notice in The Raven Chronicles and The Review of Contemporary Fiction, and the publication model of Final State Press is being refined for future books.
